RELIABLE BANDING SOLUTIONS IN EXTREME COLD

HOW BAND-IT STAINLESS STEEL BANDING SUPPORTS ABOVE GROUND PIPELINE CABLE MANAGEMENT IN ALASKA

Location: Alaska

Application: Above-ground pipeline cable management

BAND-IT Products: Stainless Steel Band & Buckle (Current bill of materials), with Tru-Lokt™ Buckles & The C001DA Drill Accessory Banding Tool planned for evaluation.

The Customer: Susitna Power Solutions

Susitna Power Solutions (SPS) designs and supplies above-ground pipeline cable management systems for some of the most demanding operating environments in North America. Their systems are deployed in remote locations where safety, reliability, and long-term performance are critical, and where access for maintenance can be limited.

As a system-level OEM, SPS requires fastening solutions that integrate cleanly into its designs, install consistently in the field, and perform reliably over the life of the infrastructure. Stainless steel band and buckle fastening is a key component of SPS’s bill of materials, supporting secure attachment without permanent modification to the pipeline itself.

Because these systems are installed in remote, high-consequence environments, fastening and attachment methods become a critical part of overall system performance.

THE CHALLENGE: FASTENING IN HIGH-DEMAND, REMOTE INSTALLATIONS

Across above-ground pipeline applications, fastening methods often introduce unnecessary complexity, cost, and installation risk. Conventional approaches that rely on brackets bolted or otherwise mechanically attached to steel structures can increase installation time, add labor and material cost, and introduce additional points of complexity. These methods often require drilling, welding, or precise alignment, which can slow installation and complicate future modifications.

In remote, high-consequence environments, fastening solutions must also support consistent installation across crews while minimizing the need for rework or ongoing maintenance. Access limitations and environmental exposure make simplicity, repeatability, and durability essential.

THE BAND-IT SOLUTION: SIMPLE, RELIABLE FASTENING

BAND-IT band and buckle systems provide a straightforward alternative to bolted or permanently mounted bracket solutions. By securing directly around the pipe, banding eliminates the need for drilling, welding, or structural modification, reducing installation time and simplifying field work. Installers can achieve consistent, secure attachment while maintaining flexibility within the overall system design.

This approach supports OEMs like SPS in building scalable, high-reliability systems that are easier to install, inspect, and maintain over time. Band and buckle fastening delivers proven folding strength and long-term durability, making it well suited for demanding applications where reliability and system integrity are non-negotiable.

Why Stainless Steel Banding Matters When Failure Isn’t An Option

Susitna Power Solutions specifies stainless steel band and buckle assemblies as part of its cable management system to withstand:

  • Extreme Cold
  • Long-Term Outdoor Exposure
  • Mechanical Loads Introduced by Thermal Movement

Looking Ahead: Evaluating Tru-Lokt Buckles & Verified Tensioning

Building on successful field use of stainless-steel band and buckle fastening, SPS is now exploring additional BAND-IT solutions to further standardize installation quality in extreme conditions. This application brings together SPS’s systems design and BAND-IT’s innovative fastening solutions.

Specifically, SPS has specified the use of:

This is driven by a common Arctic challenge: Digital torque devices can become unreliable in extreme cold, while fully mechanical systems continue to function consistently. For OEMs like SPS who are designing retention systems for high value components in remote and high-demand environments, component reliability and installation consistency are critical to overall system performance.

Supporting Infrastructure Where Reliability Is Non-Negotiable

From Alaska’s North Slope to other remote, cold-weather pipeline applications, SPS designs systems for environments where failure is not an option and access is limited. BAND-IT’s fastening solutions align naturally with these requirements by offering simplicity, strength, and long-term durability in harsh outdoor conditions.

  • No drilling, welding, or permanent pipe modification
  • Faster installation compared to bolted bracket systems
  • Consistent, repeatable attachment in remote environments
  • Long-term durability in extreme outdoor conditions

As SPS continues to advance its pipeline cable management systems, BAND-IT remains a trusted partner in delivering fastening solutions built for the realities of extreme environments.
